PRODUCING / DISSOLVING
2008
Installation with 24 hour fragmented and repetitive film,
presented on 24 monitors, accompanied by a monotone bass.
Togheter with Daniel Josefsson.
Reproduction and re:use, two of Internet's primary constituents, which largely contributes to generate its huge flow of information. Words like appropriering, remediating and remixing are etched firmly to the discourse about the global digital network. A cultureexpression considered as copyright violation.
The largest and most successful site, sucking up the core concept of Internet, is YouTube. Here visual material is uploaded by one user, then downloaded and reedited by another, to later become remixed by a third person and so on. There is an ongoing transformation of the surface, expression and substance of images, movies and music. Softwares like YouTube Remixer and other relatively simple technologys has made visual exchange easy and available for the public at large. According to YouTube, there are today more then 80 million clips available on their site and the number is constantly growing.
Being online today, means having access to enormous amounts of visualisations of the world. Information, which with few resources can be edited, altered or if you want, distorted. Acceptance for re:use is in many ways, overall, it has become a collective action and generates a flow in which digital codes are constantly being recoded. And somewhere in the notion, that everything is fluid Producing / Dissolving starts off, with its ambition to appropriate "everything that exists".
The installation takes the viewer on a journey through a contemporary popular cultural sphere. In which the focus is fragmentation and repetition. Feature films, documentaries, home made videos, music, literature, art, games, entertainment, humor, war, news, sex, violence, exoticism, tragedy, drama, ugly and beautiful images of high and low resolution, are all chopped up into pieces, reversed and jointly put toghether to a firm beat in a confusing puzzle. A visualization and a representation of the world today, its expressions and its conditions. A decree or a cacophony if you will, of the world and everything in it, without specific arrangement, without specific order.
